Gravitational lensing as folds in the sky

چکیده
We revisit the gravitational lensing phenomenon using a new visualization technique. It consists in projecting the observers sky into the source plane, what gives rise to a folded and stretched surface. This provides a clear graphical tool to visualize some interesting wellknown effects, such as the development of multiple images of a source, the structure of the caustic curves, the parity of the images and their magnification as a function of the source position.

Gravitational Lensing by Phase Sheet Folds
Collisionless cold matter in a Hubble flow occupies a 3D sheet in 6D phase space. Perturbations distort the sheet and nonlinear collapse leads to wraps and contortions, leaving the sheet intact with its original local phase density. Fold catastrophes in the projection of this sheet onto the plane of the sky produce line singularities in surface density which can lead to observable gravitational...
متن کاملA Large Sky Simulation of the Gravitational Lensing of the Cosmic Microwave Background
Large scale structure deflects cosmic microwave background (CMB) photons. Since large angular scales in the large scale structure contribute significantly to the gravitational lensing effect, a realistic simulation of CMB lensing requires a sufficiently large sky area. We describe simulations that include these effects, and present both effective and multiple plane ray-tracing versions of the a...
متن کاملThe Gravitational Lensing in Redshift-space Correlation Functions of Galaxies and Quasars
The gravitational lensing, as well as the velocity field and the cosmological light-cone warp, changes the observed correlation function of high-redshift objects. We present an analytical expression of 3D correlation function, simultaneously including those three effects. When two objects are separated over several hundreds Mpc along a line of sight, the observed correlation function is dominat...
متن کاملWeak lensing of the Sunyaev-Zel’dovich sky
We address the question of whether the angular power spectrum of the thermal Sunyaev-Zel’dovich (SZ) sky is further distorted by weak gravitational lensing of foreground large-scale structures. Using an analytic approach to both gaseous and dark halo models, we show that the contamination of weak lensing in the measurement of SZ power power is negligibly small, and relatively corrections |∆Cl|/...
متن کاملConstraints on Scalar-Field Dark Energy from the Cosmic Lens All-Sky Survey Gravitational Lens Statistics
We use the statistics of strong gravitational lensing based on the Cosmic Lens All-Sky Survey (CLASS) data to constrain cosmological parameters in a spatially-flat, inverse power-law potential energy density, scalar-field dark energy cosmological model. The lensing-based constraints are consistent with, but weaker than, those derived from Type Ia supernova redshift-magnitude data, and mildly fa...
